What is the purpose of the menstrual cycle?

It has a wonderful purpose even though it sucks going through it every month. Basically every month, our body prepares us for pregnancy. Our body makes sure the lining of our uterus is filled with rich blood and nutrients incase an egg is fertilized. And once our body realizes that an egg has not been fertilized...It sheds that bloody lining and starts the process over again.
